Vote Early or Absentee

  • Virginia is a No Excuse Absentee State — you do not need to have a reason or excuse to vote early or absentee.

  • You can request your absentee ballot at any time for the November election.

  • Ballots will be mailed 45 days prior to election day.

  • Military and overseas voters can find specific information regarding absentee voting on the state military and overseas voting page

You have the option to cast your vote in person, before Election Day at your local registrar’s office. This option starts 45 days prior to Election Day which is September 26, 2024, and runs until the Saturday immediately before November 5, 2024. Prior to visiting the local registrar’s office, it is advisable to verify your registration status or contact the registrar’s office. You can locate the phone number of your registrar’s office here. To vote early in-person, please follow these steps:

  • 45 days before Election Day, make a visit to your local registrar’s office or a designated satellite voting location within your county or city to exercise your early voting right. Remember that the last day for early voting is the Saturday prior to Election Day.

  • You are not required to provide a reason or complete an application to vote early.

  • When at the registrar’s office or satellite voting location, furnish your name and address and present an acceptable form of identification or sign an ID Confirmation Statement. Failure to provide acceptable identification will necessitate the signing of an ID Confirmation Statement, or alternatively, a provisional ballot will be offered to you. You have until noon on the following Friday to complete the ID Confirmation Statement.
